comment What does the `的` mean in `我是九点去上班的`?
@EdwardFox, right, I thought you meant that it was always implying past tense. However, my native speaking (Hunan & Taiwan) contacts didn't feel the past tense meaning in the original sentence 我是九点去上班的. They agreed on the "type" case though. Guessing this could be one of those tricky ones that depends on which person you ask.

comment What does the `的` mean in `我是九点去上班的`?
@EdwardFox, I'm not sure I agree with you there. It doesn't necessarily imply past tense. 他是吃素的 can translate into "He's a vegetarian", implied "that is the current state of his eating habits".

Thank you, this is what the accepted answer is stating as well (although in a briefer way).

comment When is the spelling and the pronunciation different?
@MickG, not surprisingly, I like the absence of a first tone marker ;) It feels very engineered, why have a symbol when you don't need one? Something has to be the default, why not let that be the first tone? But yes, it might take a few moments to get used to that. Also, the dot for netural tone is perfect (in my opinion), as a dot is circular, and doesn't go anywhere, as compared to a straight or jagged line. But as usual, whatever floats your boat!
