comment Were the choice of characters in compound words based on their intrinsic meaning, or are their meaning derived from their use in compound words?
I could imagine that the increased use of compound words were introduced when they started to write more like how they spoke (in the end of the 19th century if I remember correctly), but please correct me if I'm wrong. It would be interesting to know if they during this point invented a lot of new characters, or if the old characters already were sufficient.

@Stan I'm asking about the etymology of Chinese characters, and how their meaning were derived.

comment Where is 蛮 used, as in the meaning of 'quite'?
@Stan Ah, the 'dialectal' classifications in Chinese dictionaries maybe shouldn't be trusted! Thanks!

comment Where can I find Chinese IPA transcriptions?
@BertR To add to explanation, it's enough to look for inconsistencies within the pinyin system itself, where the character i is most notable. Notice the difference between how it's pronounced in 'xi' and in 'ri'. Or that 'e' in 'neng' and 'e' (as in being hungry) are different vowels. This is a distinction which IPA makes.
