I'm learning Chinese as a hobby. I love the language and many aspects of Chinese culture. It is difficult, but also challenging! Since I'm in Croatia, there are very few books to learn from, and even less Chinese people to practise with. Internet is virtually all I have.

Due to all this (and lack of spare time to learn), I am an extreme beginner, even after messing about for over two years! :(

Feel free to contact me if you're bored to death and would like to chat with me on Skype once in a blue moon (and laugh at my 外国人普通话:)).

Please don't laugh at my stupid questions!

comment What is 被 doing in sentence “这种病在三十年前就被根除了”?
@JamesJiao / NS.X: Thanks for this, the English examples are quite helpful, I think I understand the general theme here. Grammar is not my strong suit, I just kind of intuit my way through languages, so hopefully I'll get a chance to pracise this some day.

Well, that makes sense now. Is there a fixed number of Chinese verbs which can have this form with 被, or you can "convert" any verb that fits the sentence?

That "active form with passive meaning" part doesn't sound confusing at all! :)

Thanks, this is exactly what I wanted to know. I left the question open for a few days in case someone else wants to chip in, but it seems your answer covered it all. Thanks!

comment Why were some letters like Q, X, C, chosen for Pinyin which confuse non-Chinese speakers?
Besides, it would be impossible to create a system to satisfy all learners, and creating a system which would replace "qing xin" with "ching shin" would be a very English-centric one, discriminating all other learners. On the other hand, I find that pinyin is "mapped" very nicely to Croatian letters and sounds just the way it is, virtually the only two new sounds for me were ü and x (and I already knew ü from German).

comment What etymology dictionaries are available?
+1, Wenlin is the ultimate dictionary/reference for those who can afford it. Unfortunately, many of us cannot... :(
