I'm learning Chinese as a hobby. I love the language and many aspects of Chinese culture. It is difficult, but also challenging! Since I'm in Croatia, there are very few books to learn from, and even less Chinese people to practise with. Internet is virtually all I have.

Due to all this (and lack of spare time to learn), I am an extreme beginner, even after messing about for over two years! :(

Feel free to contact me if you're bored to death and would like to chat with me on Skype once in a blue moon (and laugh at my 外国人普通话:)).

Please don't laugh at my stupid questions!

comment Sentence structure “I'm [doing something] because [reason]”?
@Flake: Great, please add an it as an alternative in the answers, it's more prominent and you'll get some upvotes ;) My grammar book says 之 is optional, is that correct?

@YiJiang易江: It's difficult for me to understand, but I have a Croatian layout, with SCIM on Linux, they probably haven't covered that.. I've seen only SHIFT+6 there, for me that only gives an ampersand.

Indeed it is: imdb.com/title/tt0111797 Very nice movie, good listening practice, clean speech. Of course, I only understood a few sentences of the entire movie :)

Great, exactly what I was trying to get, a list of several commonly used greetings (because there is no way everyone is using the same thing!)

comment Why isn't 到 (dào) used in this sentence?
@Alenanno: <beginner>The second version (某天我到北京) sounds to me like "I was in Beijing one unspecified day in the past" or maybe "I came to Beijing one day"?</beginner> Hopefully, someone will clarify..

comment Why is it possible to replace 都 with 也 in 什么都没有?
@Flake: I think I got it: "I don't have iPhone either". When you use your second language to learn your third language sometimes you have a brain fart :)

You said that 能 and 可以 are mostly interchangeable, is there a rule on when they are not?
