Thanks for the answer and possible combinations. I prefer the more formal option for reporting purposes.

Sorry i've changed the wording to be more clear. I don't really care about the differentiation of the 2 terms. I'm more interested in learning these 4 character lexical chunks.

Why is 独一无二 as Chengyu, and the other 2 are not?

If 4 character idoms are Chengyu's then my question is for chengyu's. If not then any idiomatic term (or hypotactic as mentioned below). Effectively, I'm interested in these units of language as they are not easy to understand as a chunk when first heard.

I think I prefer the above sentence as it sounds Chinese and seems to stick closer to my original meaning. So the added 的 seems to finish the sentence off, where it is referring to anything in general that is the best...

comment What is the pattern for 'instead of x, y…'
So its sound better to use 而不是 and reverse the positions of x and y. In english it doesn't matter where x and y appear as 'instead' can start a sentence or end with it. In chinese it has to balance with 而不是 in the 2nd clause.

Thanks but my meaning is more general than actually giving them objects, which is what your sentence seems to imply.
