Arguably, that's the terminology Starbucks chose, and they were probably aware of that possible interpretation and association. They could have gone with a more neutral 特大 (which I would translate as "extra large"), but opted not to.

超 definitely has the meaning of "exceeding". I would personally choose to translate 超大 as "supersize" — in reference to the McDonald's terminology as well as the analogy to "supermarket" (超级市场).

The 1 billion Chinese children have the benefit of immersion to learn the spoken language. No doubt, memorizing characters through drills is the only way to learn the written language. However, that will be a useless strategy for a complete beginner, especially one who has no experience with a tonal language.
