comment What is the word for “they/them”?
Actually it is not the store but the salesperson that is pluralized here, so I think 他们 would be more appropriate.

comment Help translating the phrase, “was seen as.”
Your translation sounds natural. But I'd like to point out that using 视为 without a subject is also accepted, because 行为 is implied here. If I were to translate this sentence without plugging in an additional noun, I might feel that something like 革命被视为孤注一掷而且危险的 is more natural, with 视为 being followed by two adjectives so they won't be "dangling" there. But maybe it's just me.

comment Do the Chinese have a (potentially politically incorrect) way of imitating English speakers?
I can't think of any. Maybe it's because most syllables in Chinese begins and ends with vowel, which makes it hard to imitate English with Chinese. But we do imitate how foreigners speak Chinese, and sometimes in an offensive way.

comment Heisig's Learning the Hanzi books
I'm chinese myself, and I know only simplified hanzi. But I can read traditional hanzi without effort(but I can't write them correctly). So pragmatically you can start with either one. Traditional hanzi is a bit harder and looks better if you're into calligraphy.

comment How to translate: 人是铁,饭是钢,一顿不吃烦得慌. What is the logic?
I think that's just cultural difference. And as you may be aware, people in HK & TW have a tendency to describe the mainland China as strongly collectivistic and completely driven by the CCP, which is far from the reality. I'm not trying to discuss politics or the society here but I promise I've only heard this saying when I was little and my grandma tried to get me to the dinner table. But I do agree that this phrase comes from long ago, and very likely during the time of the Great Leap.

I don't think this phrase is really so related to politics. Does this answer come from experience or is it your personal speculation?

comment What are the most usual Chinese terms for permanent markers vs. whiteboard markers
To me 记号笔 is the kind of markers that you use on your books, those with vivid colors. You see, the term for markers is a bit messed up in Chinese. I (along with most people that I know) will call permanent markers 马克笔, whiteboard markers 白板笔, colorful markers 记号笔, but in a different city or even a different neighborhood, the names might vary.

Google is right, 马克笔 means marker(actually 马克 is the phonic transcription of marker), so when you ask for a 马克笔, it's possible that you end up with a whiteboard marker. It's safer to specify the type. The dictionary word for permanent markers is actually 油性马克笔, but I'm afraid most Chinese(including me) can't recognize this term. If someone ask a 油性马克笔 from me, I'd probably think: he might be asking for a permanent marker, but it's better to make sure. I'm not so used to express myself in English xD

comment Which term and which counter to use when ordering simple meals?
I can't recognize most of the dishes in the school cafeteria, so the last situation in your problem happens to me a lot. In these cases, you can just say 一份它. It's kind of weird to see the sentence written down but it sounds natural. The alternatives can be 一个它 or 一份这个 or 一个这个.

"Whiteboard marker" is 白板笔. "Permanent marker" is 马克笔. But if you want to buy one in a store, I strongly suggest that you ask specifically for one that can('t) be erased. Example: 您好,我要一只白板笔,要擦得掉的那种.

comment What does 大秀香肩美背mean?
@rabbid your guess is right! 秀 means to show off. 香 and 美 are both commonly used when describing a woman's body. But you can't say 香背 or 美肩: these collocations are kind of fixed..
