I wouldn't doubt that it's sometimes shortened to just 层. You know, just for our convenience as non-native speakers. ;-)

What is so great about "authentic" if it is inaccessible? Our cultural background, our identities -- they count, too. We are the ones acquiring the language. It amuses me that it is considered to be "culturally imperialistic" to teach only about Western holidays in an EFL class in Asia, but no one considers teaching only about Chinese festivals in a Chinese class to be in any way inappropriate.

That is a bit condescending, don't you think? Most people who are not physically resident in China or Taiwan can sometimes find it hard to find hard-copy resources, or not have the specific search skills to find things online. I think that an answer for how to obtain materials in the US might also potentially benefit those in Europe, South America, or other places outside of China.

Thanks for adding an acceptable way to express the same meaning! That's really helpful for learners.

comment What should a beginner be looking for when selecting a movie in Chinese?
There are millions of people in the world who don't read or write at all. Written language is really secondary. Children's cartoons are among the most difficult things to understand for foreign learners -- not only do they use a lot of child-friendly vocabulary that foreigners haven't heard or seen before, they also speak very quickly and use exaggerated, often high-pitched or distorted voices. I'm a trained interpreter and I have problems with Sponge Bob sometimes, never mind my sixth-graders. But they love watching it all the same, and are happy with what they can pick out. It's motivating.

comment Why does the construction of 要是…的话 mean “if”?
But it does make the etymology of very little use to the average person learning or using the language today. It matters very little what a word meant hundreds of years ago. It matters what it means now, and how the morphemes behave now. Current usage is what makes language a vital thing, not the past, though the changes over time are an interesting matter for study and discussion.

Are you a professional translator? Because I've been one for 25 years. We do use Google as an indication of what is the most common term, but we use specific search techniques, not simply putting in the Chinese word and seeing how many times it appears. If you do not understand how to do such a search, it would seem unreliable to you as a layperson.

Language in use is not about etymology. If an etymology is not commonly known -- known by the vast majority of the speakers of the language -- it is merely a pastime for linguists to argue over. Language is arbitrary. Why does the sequence of sounds /bUtr/ mean "butter"? At the end of the day, all language is arbitrary. Linguistics 101, my friend.
