comment “小王” 和 “老王” how to determine which to use?
@fefe: 50 years old is to young to call 爷爷/奶奶. I do use surnames for some of my relatives and 小/老 can be used for bosses when you talk about them with a friend. Thanks :o/

I've done some remunerated translation and interpret jobs (and I studied translation) but I cannot call myself a professional translator. However if you read the links above, you'll get advice from other professionals. You're free to follow them or not.

comment What is a good technique for remembering tones?
In my experience it's a very bad idea. When students tried this they had to remember what color corresponds to what accent and what color has one character. (the process in their head was "What color is 去 and what accent is that color?" when it should have been simply "what accent is 去") That's a lot to remember. What's wrong with just remembering the accent itself instead? (with a small mark above the character or simple have a sentence in pinyin below for some time?)

Professionals shouldn't use google counts: meta.japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/522/… as for Chinese terms I would use baidu or sogou (see also meta.english.stackexchange.com/questions/397/…)
