Difference between 合适 and 适合 @Dan Please tell me what doesn't sound right. Under "Comprehensive Chinese-English Dictionary" in the entry you mentioned it says that it is a verb, under the Collins it's an adjective. The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary remains the most authoritative and popular account of the modern Chinese language. |

Difference between 合适 and 适合 I've heard that although both can be used as a predicate. E.g., 这种工作对他很合适 and 这件衣服适合你的体形 If 合适 is used as a predicate, it cannot be followed by a object. While 适合, must be follow by an object or another word when it is used as a predicate. I've seen conflicting uses of this online so I cannot be sure. |

How to describe differences between Cantonese and Mandarin? @jogloran Can you tell me where I am mistaken? I realize that this might differ depending on dialect. It is to my understanding that since the p, t, k stops occur only in syllable final position & are unreleased, there is an unavoidable addition of a glottal stop before any following vowel, creating an overall choppy feeling to the language. From what I've read, the glottal stop can be found in most of the Min dialects. I realize that standard Cantonese, spoken in Guangzhou region (including Hong Kong), does not have this sound, but can be found in 東莞 and 陽江 regions within Guangdong province. |
