comment Is the character 年 (or its etymology) related to the mythical beast in Chinese mythology?
@Huang - Yes, agreed. Just wanted to check if that was the same as the bottom character in the 甲骨文 you provided. Now I understand. Thanks!

Wiktionary sites 秊 as the oldest version of 年. Not sure if that is the same one in your answer. If it is the bottom half is 千. The meaning being grain harvested after an extended period of time.

comment Use of 龙 in the idiom 车水马龙
Very interesting: 车像流水, 马像游龙. I always assumed that 车水马龙 would be four different things, not two.

I don't quite get your question. Are you asking if 年 was named nián because the beast was called nián?

@Lagoona - The link to the show is here jstv.com/c/ws/fcwr/201107/t20110724_538002.shtml I was in China at the time the filming was done but the friend part was filmed in Australia. He is the first guy in the linked episode.

When it comes to describing the English language I'm not very clever. Not sure if the colour thing meets the adj. but not a verb?

@Lagoona - One of my good friends here in Australia went on that show a couple of months ago in a special show which was for Australian contestants only. They brought both the men and the ladies from Australia. Although he didn't do well because his friends made him look bad during the friends interview part.

comment How are new words added to the Chinese language?
@Ciaocibai - Do you mind if I hijack your question by editing rather than starting a new question. I would like to include that things such as band names (Portishead, Gorillaz etc.) and president Obama all have Chinese equivalents. Who decides on what their name should be in Chinese?

But many (not claiming all of them) of the new words in Chinese for technology, such as the internet, originate in English. Who decides what the right word for these is in Chinese?
