I'm a student majoring in Languages (branch: Linguistics), currently working as a freelance translator. I've recently discovered Dropbox and I'm going to use it for my needs! :)

I love
Languages, Movies (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Tarantino, etc.), Music, 3D Graphics, books and so on.

Appointed ♦ Moderator Pro Tempore on Linguistics SE, Chinese SE and the Russian SE site. If you're interested in other Stack Exchanges, try the Italian SE site.

I like to lurk on other sites' Metas. Meta is fun!

My feature requests:

  1. Alert a moderator when an answer is improved after a post notice
  2. Automatically add chat event to the community bulletin (or make it easier)
  3. Give 10k users the ability to see the total count of flags they've handled

Moderator issues: If you have concerns or want to contact me about my moderation, you can find/ping me either in the Linguistics SE chat room or CL&U chat room; if I'm not there or I'm "idle", just ping me! Please avoid using my personal email for such things. Use the chat rooms.

comment Benefits of Learning a Chinese Dialect in Addition to Standardized Mandarin
It's ok if it's specific. Language-specific questions are ok there. (Don't repost there right away, that is cross-posting and is highly discouraged.)

Don't you think this question would be more suitable for Linguistics? :)

comment 9 Questions from the movie Red Sorghum (红高粱)
Growler, for the next times: asking multiple questions is ok. :) I suggest not all at the same time, but yeah... :) Also, that will increase your chances to get more upvotes, by the way.

That doesn't surprise me. :D What mistakes did it make?

Have you tried Google Translate? I know it isn't usually reliable, but maybe with a fixed expression...

comment How to translate “I wonder…”
Welcome to Chinese Language and Usage Beta! Usually we prefer longer and more elaborated answers on short answers. If you can improve your answer by adding detail, context, examples, and backing up with references, this would increase your answer's quality. Poor answers risk being down-voted and subsequently removed.

comment Where can I find more cartoon videos like BBC's Muzzy for a young child to learn Mandarin?
@Dan I'm closing this as NC for now. Please refer to our FAQ point "Can I ask for resources?", it will you give you enough info. Please note that closed questions are not just gone. You can still improve it according to the guidelines. After you do it, just flag it for moderator attention and let us know, we'll reopen it. My best suggestion is: make it as narrow and scope you can. If your question asks for a small range of answers only, you're set. The problem is with broad and open-ended questions. :) Hope this helps.

comment problem with 要 - it seems to have several meanings
Arika, mind to add something more? Your answer triggered the low quality flag, make sure to write a meaningful answer (3 or 4 lines is enough).

comment Why do Chinese translations of English names sound very inaccurate?
"because Japanese doesn't have "r" but "l"" I'd say the opposite... Chinese has the L while Japanese has R.

comment Regional pronunciations of standard Mandarin
Aristide, list questions are usually not fit for Q&A sites. Sometimes short lists are ok or with strict requirements. But in your case, it seems it's much broader.

comment Why 『衛護』's 『護』 is 言部?
@Mike You can ask your question in Chinese. What we ask is, if you want to do the best, to provide an english translation. It's not mandatory, but it would be greatly appreciated. You could do something like this, but also translating the title in your question separated by /. There is no need you write "english version" or "chinese version": it will be clear by itself. :D

comment What's an appropriate conversational response to 这是什么?
That is an explanation you could have added to your answer. Please do it. When you're answering, one-liners are not that helpful. Always try to expand adding explanations, comparisons, anything that will help increase the quality of your answer.
