I'm a language student and teacher who has quite a lot of opinions on how to learn languages more efficiently. Since I think there is a severe lack of people discussing how to learn (rather than just what to learn), I'm running a website called Hacking Chinese, welcome!

Regarding 破音字, that isn't necessarily a big problem. Choosing the most common tone would solve most problems and checking the rest manually would still be much quicker than adding each mark manually. Also, if the tool checked against any dictionary, most 破音字 could be sorted out.

The reasons why I want to do this are slightly complicated, but since this is what several textbooks actually do (Practical Audio-Visual Chinese, and New Chinese Practical Reader, for instance), I'm not alone in thinking that this is a good idea. The thing is that if you have Pinyin next to the characters, it's hard for people used to the Latin alphabet to read the characters at all. Students eyes focus automatically on the Pinyin. This is not good. Adding only tone marks offers the support the students need without making them read the Pinyin instead of the characters.

comment When to use 家 vs 师 vs 员 vs 者
I'd like to add that 員 is usually used when the person is part of a group, such as staff at a company or a member of a sports team.

comment Difference between 特色, 特點, 特性, 特質, and 特徵
Could you please try explain what the different word imply, for instance in the case of 個人特X or 文化特X? Also, what do you think about my guesswork? You seem to agree that 特質 is about internal or abstract things. What do you think about the rest? Thanks. :)

comment Which dictionaries reveal the commonly mistaken usage of a word (i.e. how NOT to use a word)?
Looks interesting, going to see if I can lay my hands on this one locally. You don't happen to know any other, similar books?

Wouldn't how to not use the word be dependent on the user's first language. I'm quite sure Swedish and Japanese students make different mistakes.

Okay, two other people managed to answer the same question during the time it took me to write the answer. Well spent time indeed. :)

comment Difference between 佈 and 布
This isn't correct, see my own answer below. The answer is that 布 can be used for both meanings, whereas 佈 can't be used for cloth-related meanings.

If you're asking from a learning or teaching perspective, you can check this article I wrote about this.

Actually, I wanted to express that I didn't like DotA either, so perhaps your suggestion is better. I didn't state that very clearly in my question, though.

And would the usage of this phrase be applicable to e.g. computer games or things which aren't related to the literal meaning of the characters?
