comment How to describe differences between Cantonese and Mandarin?
The words are technically existent in both dialects. The idiomatic expressions and day to day vocabulary choices may differ between the dialects though. In general, phrases may be carried over between them while retaining their meanings (so it would "make sense") but it may not be the same way that a native speaker of that dialect would phrase it. Also, there are various slang terms that are words "created" by speakers of a dialect which may not transfer as well as the "proper" terms

Well, they are in a complex relationship so it would be difficult to summarize into a 'headline' but that's about as well as I can describe it. I would consider myself a fluent Cantonese speaker but I can understand most of the things my Mandarin friends say

I would basically use the British English vs. American English type of analogy where its fundamentally the same language but varies in wording, expressions/idioms, and pronunciation
