comment How to use 指 when giving a definition?
@trideceth12 You are right. "是指" is used together, meaning "refers to". "是" is an essential part. (native speaker here)

comment How to translate “be mature” into Mandarin?
主动 is more like "proactive" and has a positive connotation.

comment What is the difference in use between 完 and 了?
I agree with fefe. 没看完了, 没吃完了, 没看了, or 没吃了 are not correct. Please consider editing your answer.

comment What is the difference between 一只狗 and 一条狗?
@fefe I don't think 一只虫 and 一只狗 are used often. Rather, 一只小狗 and 一条狗 make more sense.

comment Do acronyms borrowed from English use neutral tone (aka tone 0 or tone 5) for all syllables?
CD is pronounced "C" and "D" (as they are in English). If it did have a tone, si4 would be 四, not "C". Then that would get you far from the right pronunciation.

comment How to parse 没得 + Verb constructions
As a native speaker, I've never seen 往事是没的介意的. Maybe a more common example would be 跟他没得计较 (can't really argue with him)? EDIT: after I wrote this, I felt like 跟他没得计较 should fall in the first category... I'm confused about the "needn't" meaning.

+1 for the excellent example. I would never be able to translate it as a native speaker!

comment What is the difference between 演奏, 弹 and 奏?
You could also use 打鼓 in addition to 敲鼓. 弹 is the correct verb for plucked string instruments. For example, you 弹古筝 (guzheng) or 弹吉他 (guitar).
