comment How to ask “is it really so that…”?
你是18岁 sounds awkward. Maybe “你才18岁”?

comment 六一 and short date format
@dusan By 快乐“六一” do you mean "a happy Childrens' Day"? As in "I had a very happy/pleasant Childrens' Day with my parents"? Then that would be “我和爸爸妈妈度过了一个快乐的六一.” If not, “六一快乐” is "Happy Childrens' Day."

As noted above, the first 不同 is an adjective ("different") while the second one is a verb (differ).

comment How can I translate “非语言表达方式”?
@aelephant Your teacher is right about the distinction between 想法 and 思想. But in your example, "思想感情" is more like an idiom that means "thoughts and emotions." For instance, you would see on a Chinese exam "这篇文章表达了作者什么样的思想感情" (what message is the author trying to convey, i.e. "what thoughts and emotions does the author have in his essay"). So 思想 alone is indeed "deep philosophical thoughts" and more like a school of thought, but 思想感情 is "thoughts and emotions."

Maybe "take a hike" means the same thing? I'm not sure how strong that phrase is, though.

I think it should be "现在我就是不要跟他说话", which means "I don't want to talk to him now."

comment Are 明白 and 懂 synonymous?
@Icarus An example of the difference would be Tanya Chua's song 越来越不懂爱. You wouldn't say 越来越不明白爱. Similar songs include 我更想懂你 (instead of 我更想明白你) and 白天不懂夜的黑 (the day doesn't understand the night - bad translation but you know it's a metaphor).

comment What is the most complex simplifed character?
An interesting fact is a lot of people in China don't know how to write 喷嚏 (sneeze) or 尴尬 (embarrassment). Those are probably the most commonly missed words.

@jaffa Would you mind looking at my answer below? I think that might be what you were trying to say.

comment Why in China do they use k instead of m for the slope of a line?
My American text book uses "m". Since the Chinese borrowed their curriculum from the Europeans, it might be the same as Europe.

comment What is the 成语 for “face like buddha, heart like scorpion”?
Maybe the "scorpion" part is 心如蛇蝎 (heart like a snake and a scorpion).

comment What is the best Chinese equivalent for “passion” or “to be passionate about something”?
Nice answer! 热爱 is more common than 酷爱, I think. 特别喜欢 also works.

comment Are there poems in Chinese that rhyme?
Most Chinese poems rhyme (in a way similar to Shakespeare's). We also have 平仄, which is (sort of) like the stressed and non-stressed syllables in traditional English poems.

我三岁以前只能喝牛奶 is correct. But your second example is right on target!

comment How do I say “a loaf of bread”?
@BertR By "authentic" do you mean "accurate"? It's probably native speakers that tend to overuse "个".

comment How do I say “a loaf of bread”?
一个面包 is correct in "我要买一个面包" and "你赶紧把这个面包吃了". So I guess if you are not referring a specific piece, 个 works.
