Some characters look different handwritten and on the computer - how to learn the differences? @xiaohouzi79 cool thanks. Do you know if then, the blue one is how it is usually written for traditional chinese? (or if it's just a font issue) |

Why do I see 我 for I, but is pronounced WAH It could potentially be a different dialect - 我 in Taiwanese is pronounced "wah" |

Some characters look different handwritten and on the computer - how to learn the differences? I'm using a mac. I don't think it's a missing font issue (can see the character as you guys see it in firefox and also when I bring up word/pages and play around with the fonts). I'm thinking it is the default Chinese font used for Mac that is to blame (quick google gives: zonble.github.com/tcfail/en.html) |

Some characters look different handwritten and on the computer - how to learn the differences? Changing to Unicode in Chrome doesn't seem to make a difference, but using Firefox shows the same as what you've got above. Now I'm slightly less confused knowing it is the encoding/font causing the difference. Thanks! |

Some characters look different handwritten and on the computer - how to learn the differences? @Kabie ic ic, opened word and tested out a few fonts - indeed depending on font the character changes. Do you know which is used in Mainland and which in Taiwan? |

Some characters look different handwritten and on the computer - how to learn the differences? I had a look at that question before asking this one. I guess I'm more so asking what characters look different when in print (vs handwritten), as opposed to learning to read cursive/shortcuts/slang handwriting. |

How widespread is the use of 妳? As far as I know, in traditional Chinese 你 can be used for both male/female (ie. to some extent it is gender neutral). However, 妳 is only used for female (similar to 他 and 她). |

Techniques for learning and retaining characters +1 to SRS method of learning. I use Train Chinese. It's pretty good as it supports simplified/traditional and you can practice via your browser or a mobile running Android/iPhone. |

How to describe differences between Cantonese and Mandarin? One difference between the analogy of American/British English is that pronunciation in Cantonese and Mandarin are different enough for one who is fluent in Mandarin to not understand something said in Cantonese (and vice versa) - they maybe able to catch snippets here and there. |
