I've spent three years living in China, and speak pretty reasonable Chinese (+ my girlfriend is a translator). I love Macs, travel, and the internet, and I'm always trying to get in shape. Anything else you'd like to know? Just ask.

comment When not to use 厕所 when asking for the toilet?
Lucky you don't have friends like mine, some of the boys just go 拉屎 (lit. pull a shit) which I think sounds pretty nasty!

comment Do all schools in China teach in Standard Chinese (普通话)?
"How could they teach Mandarin if they couldn't even speak it"... That was my feeling about probably 50% of the English teachers I met in China - we went to visit a few schools, and man, they had no idea at all how to speak English.

Great answer - I think you made some really good points.

comment Why do Chinese “extend” the last word when speaking?
I only notice this with people from Guangdong, something to do with the way they speak in Cantonese maybe? Thai people speak in a very similar way. But I don't think it's universal around China.

Oh, and glad you like ChinaSmack - the glossary is pretty amazing. There are actually a couple of books on Amazon you may be interested in all about slang and cursing in Chinese - for example amazon.com/Dirty-Chinese-Everyday-Slang-Whats/dp/1569757275

Maybe it's the people I hang out with; I have to say, I've heard people say 哎呀 more in the South of China than the North.

Or if stubbing your toe, 哎呀,好疼! might be pretty acceptable. 哎呀is one of my personal favorite words, and probably lines up with what you are trying to express pretty well.
