How do I call for a male waiter? @Alexsu I am not sure where you get the idea that pinyin is not intended for people who are learning Mandarin. It's THE transcription standard used internationally for teaching people who wish to speak Mandarin as a secondary language, much like the romaji. I've taught Mandarin myself. In all the universities that I am aware of that teach Mandarin, pinyin is used for beginners. Not some pseudo scheme that someone just came up with (like 'shiao', which really only works in English). |

What is the correct pronunciation of 垃圾? 苏州话 usually sounds more 'feminine' and 'graceful'. So the shift from an open central vowel to a back vowel is a common feature, so is the change from an alveolo-palatal sibilant to a alveolar sibilant. You can actually find the info about the Shanghainese pronunciations on Cong Xu's wiktionary page. |

What is the correct pronunciation of 垃圾? Pete, I did some diggging around and found that lehseh is the dated pronunciation in Shanghainese. You'd be hardpressed to find anyone pronouncing it like this in Shanghai nowadays. The majority would pronounce it as '/lɑ̈ɕi/' (falling-rising-falling). |
