comment How do I call for a male waiter?
@AlexSu Please try to use pinyin as much as possible as it is the standard transcription scheme used on an international level at the moment. I believe even Taiwan has started to move towards this direction.

comment Why is 真都不错 used here instead of 都真不错?
他真跳得高 sounds extremely colloquial. I personally wouldn't use it as it sounds a little strange to me.

One suggestion - if a sentence is grammatically incorrect, use the asterix (*) to indicate it instead of inventing your own notation.

comment What is the correct pronunciation of 垃圾?
@StumpyJoePete haha.. 'femininity' is a subjective term. Maybe I am influenced by 苏州评弹, whose male performers usually have very feminine voices.

comment What is the correct pronunciation of 垃圾?
苏州话 usually sounds more 'feminine' and 'graceful'. So the shift from an open central vowel to a back vowel is a common feature, so is the change from an alveolo-palatal sibilant to a alveolar sibilant. You can actually find the info about the Shanghainese pronunciations on Cong Xu's wiktionary page.

comment What is the correct pronunciation of 垃圾?
Pete, I did some diggging around and found that lehseh is the dated pronunciation in Shanghainese. You'd be hardpressed to find anyone pronouncing it like this in Shanghai nowadays. The majority would pronounce it as '/lɑ̈ɕi/' (falling-rising-falling).

I changed the part of your quote that's in traditional script into simplified; it looked really strange having both scripts in the same paragraph. The phonetics for the Shanghainese phrase doesn't sound quite right. Maybe it's an obsolete/dated pronunciation.

comment Why do native speakers often say a character has “no meaning”?
Maybe they have no idea how to explain it? Not everyone is into linguistics.

comment How would you translate the word '面子'?
@Derek朕會功夫 This is an interesting term. It doesn't sound forced at all to me, however, it seems to be used more when associated with the Chinese as it is, after all, culturally specific. Normally, one would simply say, to honour or to pay respect to (someone's sensitivity or sensibilities), but these lack the cultural nuance that comes with to 'give face'.

comment How would you translate the word '面子'?
It had been assimilated into English vocab quite some time ago as Pete pointed out.

comment Is there a literal meaning of 对不起?
@Derek朕會功夫 You can assume that Mandarin is what Matthew was looking for, as you have pointed out yourself the difference in how it's expressed in Cantonese. Just a side note, my answer also applies to Wu. Thanks for the extra info however.
