Pronunciation of 和 in Taiwan Yes, it could definitely mean that too, but not in the context of your example :). But in this definition, it's sort of vague. Old to what degree? Before the Communist? Before the National Party? Prior to 1980? I guess it's all up to the context. |

Pronunciation of 和 in Taiwan 老+place name is a common enough expression. The second link also gives you 老昆明 :). Another real life example: I am not a 老上海 since I left Shanghai at a young age, but my parents are :). |

Pronunciation of 和 in Taiwan Thanks :). Actually, 老北京 here means 'someone (often advanced in age) who comes from and has lived in Beijing for most of their life, and who acts/speaks in a way that's stereotypically of Beijing.'. It is therefore short for 老北京人. This might imply that the person's accent/vocab is typical of that from decades ago, which is actually the case in this context. I do, however, agree with the overall picture that your answer paints. |

Why Cantonese is considered as a dialect of Chinese? Just on a somewhat related account, the English Wiktionary considers Mandarin and Cantonese separate languages. I believe the rationale behind this decision is the fact that they belong to separate topolects. Even Wu is considered a separate language. |

Difference between 喜乐 and 快乐？ Actually I have to contradict you there. The 乐 in 喜乐 is pronounced as expected, which is lè. It wouldn't make any sense for it to be pronounced yuè as its meaning would change completely (it'd be "happy music" which is really a sum of parts compound). Here is the entry for it on zdic.net: zdic.net/cd/ci/12/ZdicE5Zdic96Zdic9C114284.htm. 喜乐 is a much rarer compound than 喜悦, that much I agree, but I have been able to find citations of it in various written texts online. I've included one example in my comment reply on the question. |
