comment Is 了 optional when a time word is present?
I don't agree with some of this or maybe I am just not understanding the English. I will try to edit this a bit later.

You are mixing 'transliteration' with literal translation.

comment list of Chinese language country name abbreviations
@hippietrail You are right about me trying to enforce these rules even if I wasn't completely aware of what I was doing. I believe I have since relaxed the rules. I am including pretty much every two character country names suffixed with 国 as long as they are attestable.

@hippietrail I can't seem to attest 蒙国 at all. I just can't imagine a two character country name being 'abbreviated' to another two character country name. 墨国 and 加国 are attestable, but 西国 is a bit harder to attest due to its name conflict with an ancient Chinese city state.

hmm.. I am not so sure if it's an abbreviation though? Otherwise it would definitely warrant inclusion here. I am contradicting myself here as this would rule out 泰国 as well.. hmm.

comment Anyone know why cellphones are called 大哥大 in Taiwan?
You should mention what user58955 stated in the comments - the term was fairly standard in common speech in mainland China, before it was replaced by 手机 due to the miniaturisation of the device.

comment “C'est la vie” (such is life) in Chinese
Upvoted. The direct literal translation is the best here.

comment Are “身份证” and “身分证” totally interchangeable?
+1 interesting. I will do some research on this and probably add the alt form to Wiktionary.

comment Are there multiple translations for 不上边?
I would probably refer to 不上 as a verb infix, rather than an aux verb. Anyway, terminology aside, this answer is right on the mark.

comment Is there a tone sandhi rule that “4 3” changes to “4 0”?
It doesn't have something to do with this discussion, does it? en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Talk:%E8%B1%86%E8%85%90
