First-year mathematics PhD student at Stanford University.
I started learning Mandarin as a kid, then became more serious about it in high school and college. Now that I'm starting grad school, I'm hoping to find little ways to keep up my Chinese.

What is the difference between 总是 and 一直? @jaffa: I think the point is that 总是 means "frequently" in the sense of many frequent discrete events, whereas 一直 means "continually" in the sense of something happening continuously over a span of time. As Terry says, they are synonyms, but they transmit different feelings. |

How do I decide whether to use 可以, 会 or 能? +1 for providing counter-examples. (That is, an example of where one could mean 会 but definitely not 能.) I think that where usage questions are concerned, any full answer needs to contain at least one counter-example. |
