Linguist by talent, code-monkey by choice, corporate drone by necessity. French part-time wine trader and coder, living in Asia since the dark days of the [blink] tag. I used to code 8080 assembly by hand. Now, I stay a few layers above that. Craziness is for the young.

I do mostly custom code dev (desktop apps for SMEs, or middleware). Got interested recently in mobile apps, and despite my undying love for Blackberry phones (that's the corporate drone speaking), I code mostly in Phonegap for Android and sometimes iOS. I have a bunch of code on Google Code, which I guess I should move to GitHub – all the more so since git is my weapon of choice.

I do Java/C code only with a gun to my head – but Android is good at dragging me back in Java-land. Python preferred for non-critical apps. GUI apps mostly in RealStudio (and C glue code in dylibs). Erlang when I want to make my CPUs overheat and scream past the competition ;-)

comment When and why is right to left writing used?
The part about the signs being mirrored is interesting: that's exactly what happened in hieroglyphs: when written right to left they are also mirrored. This was actually not confusing, but helpful, as a quick glance enabled you to guess the direction of the script by looking where the faces of people/animals were facing.

comment Wubihua / Traditional Chinese / Open-source index
After review, this document is even a little too exhaustive, as it mixes Traditional and Simplified. Picky, I know... :) I wrote a script to weed out the chaff, and I think I have now a good list to start with. Thanks again!

google.com/search?rls=en&q=wubihua 4th link is the more complete one, but only four digits, so pretty much useless...

comment Are Cantonese and Lao related?
Indeed there may have been some influence from Chinese/Cantonese in Thai/Lao/Khmer. Like Jon, I was amazed at the similarities of Thai and Cantonese numerals. I remember being in hotel an elevator, with a bunch of Thais, and they were all calling their floors -- I got all of them :-)

comment Are 明白 and 懂 synonymous?
Actually, in Cantonese, 明白 is the more common verb, often abbreviated as 明... 懂 is only used in writing. 明唔明呀? Do you understand? 唔明... I don't... or 明白 I do.

comment Why 给 is used in 我的手被虫子给咬了?
Yes indeed. The sentence has the same basic structure, except that 俾=給, etc

comment Written Cantonese input?
Jyutping for Mac OS X exists also. I have been using it for years rescomp.stanford.edu/~domingo2/Chinese.html And my Blackberry from Peoples (中國移動香港) comes preloaded with jyutping input too.
