I lived in China for a couple years. My Chinese isn't too bad, but I'm always trying to get better. Special interests in:

  • Etymology
  • Historical phonology
  • Winning arguments in other languages

comment Use of 而 preceding verb
+1 Good examples and explanation. I disagree with your interpretation in the first 2 examples being 而 = "to"/infinitive. I'm pretty sure they're just turned around versions of the "而⋯⋯,是为了" pattern. That is, "为(了)⋯⋯,而⋯⋯".

comment 该 - How do you know when to use it? Nothing to do with 应该
Yeah, presumably it's short for 活该? Anyhow, I haven't heard it suggested the demonstrative 该 is negative.

True, but that is not the usage the OP is asking about.

comment How is the 儿 ending pronounced outside Beijing?
@Growler No, it's a statement. The implied question is "perhaps there's an example with more universal appeal/applicability"?

He doesn't want to use characters to learn Pinyin, he wants to learn characters, using Pinyin.

It would be impossible to provide such a font that worked for all cases, as some characters have different pronunciations based on the context. I'd go with applications or browser extensions, where you can highlight a word and get a lookup.

comment Is there on-line Corpus for Chinese language?
Please clarify what kinds of queries you need to run. For instance, why wouldn't google meet your purposes (you can limit to Chinese results only)?

Please clarify what you mean by "verbal associations". Can you give an example of such a list, for, say, English?

FYI, I had never encountered "fluorescent tube" until a minute ago. I guess they're both right.

comment Why are intermediate cardinal directions read differently in Chinese?
@simon I think someone could do more research on this and come up with a better answer or an edit. 平仄 is defined in terms of Middle Chinese tones, not Modern Mandarin ones, so this could be right.
