I lived in China for a couple years. My Chinese isn't too bad, but I'm always trying to get better. Special interests in:

  • Etymology
  • Historical phonology
  • Winning arguments in other languages

He doesn't want to use characters to learn Pinyin, he wants to learn characters, using Pinyin.

It would be impossible to provide such a font that worked for all cases, as some characters have different pronunciations based on the context. I'd go with applications or browser extensions, where you can highlight a word and get a lookup.

comment Is there on-line Corpus for Chinese language?
Please clarify what kinds of queries you need to run. For instance, why wouldn't google meet your purposes (you can limit to Chinese results only)?

Please clarify what you mean by "verbal associations". Can you give an example of such a list, for, say, English?

FYI, I had never encountered "fluorescent tube" until a minute ago. I guess they're both right.

comment Why are intermediate cardinal directions read differently in Chinese?
@simon I think someone could do more research on this and come up with a better answer or an edit. 平仄 is defined in terms of Middle Chinese tones, not Modern Mandarin ones, so this could be right.

Welcome to Chinese StackExchange, here's an upvote to start you off. Why don't you add some example sentences, and maybe more people will upvote you :)

Taiwan uses Manadarin! Traditional/simplified is completely orthogonal to Mandarin/other-dialects.

I think this answer does an excellent job addressing the meanings that the OP was really looking for. +1 for persistence and updating your answer as more information became available!

What's your question? Is it "what is the historical reason for this simplification, if any?" or is it "don't you guys all agree with me that this is weird?"? The former seems appropriate for this site, while the latter does not.

comment What does 唰 (shua1) mean?
@ColinMcLarty FYI, "shabu shabu" means "swish swish" in Japanese (and, by extension, a type of dish)

comment How widely is Mandarin used in Nanjing?
@zyc I've only ever seen it on the map when buying high-speed rail tickets :) I'm back in the US now, but thanks for the well-wishing.

@zyc I lived in 昆山 for a while, and had friends and coworkers from 南京、扬州、and other places in 江苏 (both Jianghuai and Wu speaking places). Also, I have a strong interest in Chinese linguistics :)

Zyc is correct. Nanjing dialect is a variety of Jianghuai Mandarin, and is definitely not a Wu dialect (although it's surrounded by Wu dialects).
