comment In what contexts would I use 由?
Do all your examples need 是 to preceded the 由? In my novice experience, I think I would have written the sentences like this (I'm just taking the first one as an example): 发动机是蒸汽被驱动的。 Is my sentence wrong? If it isn't wrong, how can I know what contexts to use 由 and when to use something else? Thanks!

Maybe… it's just not clear to me how to translate the first phrase.

comment What is the appropriate translation for 'energy'?
Thanks for doing it in 简体字 in addition to 繁体字. I was confused at first but I realized the two were the same sentence just using different orthographies.

comment What's the difference between 了解 and 理解?
Great book. Great explanation. Thanks! (I suppose you could add English translation, but I found the Chinese explanation sufficient.)

comment How to learn how to pronounce and remember names of Chinese students?
I think 1. is the easiest and most practical way to go. Note that if they have already had a lot of Western contact they'll probably give you an easy way to say their name (i.e. a non-Chinese transliteration that is close enough but not 'correct') or an English name.
