Hi, I am a real estate consultant and property agent working at FussFreeHome. I graduated with a degree in engineering but made a career switch to the more lucrative real estate industry. Nevertheless, I am still passionate about learning new things from computers to the universe. I will continue to ask questions and help others by answering some as a way to contribute back to the community.

comment How to say “politically correct” or “political correctness” in Chinese?
I think the last line of the quote should be "英语politically INCORRECT 形容任何不属于社会规范的语言".

comment Why are intermediate cardinal directions read differently in Chinese?
@TomAu, the only language-related reason I can think of is in the pronunciation. 东 and 西 are pronounced using the first tone ¯, 南 is pronounced with the second tone ˊ, and 北 is pronounced with the third tone ˇ. Compound words are usually arranged in the order of increasing tone if there is no other meaningful order since it is easier to pronounce them this way. Example 大喊大叫, 好言好语, 难分难舍, 左思右想, etc. As for what Stan has pointed out regarding the sunrise, I think it applies to not just the Chinese.

Different countries and cultures adopt their own conventions. Although this is an interesting question, but what has this got to do with Chinese language?

Depending on context, it can mean 保持中立, i.e. not siding with any party.

comment Which marital verbs are used for same-sex marriages?
Same-sex marriages are not recognized in many countries. I suspect that there isn't any special Chinese term to cater for this. It is quite likely that the same marriage vows are used: the dominant half 娶; the other half 嫁.

comment Translation for “things you don't agree on”
@xiaohouzi79, that's true, my point is "things that you don't agree on" don't lessen over the years. It is more about making compromises. Maybe "arguments" would be more appropriate if you want to mention "in the first year". Depending on how you put it across, it may sound awkward, especially on a wedding occasion.

In that case, I won't mention "in the first year" at all. As suggested by NS.X., talk to them in private instead. E.g. 意见不合是在所难免的,只要能互相包容,夫妻俩是可以白头到老的。
