comment How does one distinguish between homographs in Chinese?
No worries. Every learner makes mistakes. It's difficult for me to create a sentence with this word, which can confuse people, because the meaning are so different.

comment Syntax of 'Number Number MeasureWord'
@jogloran 十八九个 sounds good, while 十九二十个 sounds a little strange, but I think I will understand it in the similar sense of "十八九个". You maysay "二十个左右" or "大约二十" or even "十九或二十个" to express that meaning.

comment Syntax of 'Number Number MeasureWord'
@jogloran In general, the pattern is [numberA][numberA+1][measure word], so 十五七公里 is wrong, however, there are very few exceptions like 百八十. Such exceptions are fixed, so you can't say 八十百 or 百九十. Also, in classic Chinese poems, the order of the numbers may invert to meet the format of poems. I.e,竹外桃花三两枝.(by famous poet/writer/politician 苏轼)

comment What characters are on this ceramic jar?
Claw's answer is good. He is not sure that the last character is "寧(simplified:宁)", and I also doubt it. That character seems like “樂(simplified:乐)” to me, which means "happy, delightful". Look at the bottom part of that tree, it looks like "木", right?

comment What is the difference between 人民 and 民族?
I think the word "people" can mean "race" and in this case, it's countable noun and means "民族".

comment What is the difference between 人民 and 民族?
I think there is no word of "中华人民", you may want to say "中国人民" (the Chinese People). The formal official name of China is "the People's Republic of China", in Chinese "中华人民共和国", but that's another story, because here 中华 and 人民 are two words.

comment Different nuances of words such as 进行, 实施, 执行, etc
good question. The meanings of some of them overlaps partly. It would need a long paragraph to explain everything.

comment Did phonological systems (namely bopomofo) standardize Chinese phonemes?
I don't think we could/should discuss it here because I believe most of the members here are not linguists or on a research level. You are talking about the evolution of the sounds in Chinese. Average people don't know this, even you use 'imagine' in your question.

comment Is 再过[时间] the most common way of expressing “in [amount of time], something will happen”?
@DonKirkby It's my pleasure. I just visited the tatoeba page from the link in the question(by the way, its name sounds like a Japanese word...), and I found PinYin for this sentence is not quite right. 得 should be "de"(neutral) here and 一 should be "yì" (sandhi here).

comment Is there a comprehensive list of vocabulary differences between 台湾国语 and 大陆普通话?
I don't think average Chinese can show you a list because we don't learn the differences specially and a person from the mainland can communicate with a person from Taiwan(of course, even for these different words,it's easy for one to explain it to the another). I know some differences in terms in technical areas, but I can't show you a comprehensive list.

comment How to communicate with (Chinese) foreign exchange students?
Purmou,I agree with Alenanno. You may want to narrow and specify your question. I.e, How to ask a Chinese if he can speak English? How to ask a Chinese how fluently he speaks English?

comment What words are used to express the sincerity when texting your friends in festival period, such as the Spring Festival?
The words are used in short text messages(on the phone). I don't think "此致敬礼" is the choice. It's used in letters, I believe.

comment Character and meaning for the 四川话 sentence-ending particle 'ga'?
because very few characters have the sound of "ga", I think 嘎 is the very choice.in fact ,when I want to express this meaning,I would like to say "对吧", in a standard way.also, pinyin "ga" is acceptable when both of the listener and speaker are familiar with the dialect.

comment What is the rule for forming chinese names diminutives?
diminutive here means "爱称" or "昵称", so I understand the question as how to call people that you are familiar with. because of the different cultures between China and the west, I don't think we can find a precise or universal answer. As to the character "董",I only heard of this usage for some stars, but I think that's because they have their own studios and thus can be considered as 董.in Taiwan, can you use this for anyone that you are familiar with?
