This question already has an answer here:

I just looked up the meaning of 欧尼 (a Korean word) on Baidu baiku. On the page it showed the following:

注:欧尼只是日语哥的意思 而不是哥哥 哥哥在日语中的发音是欧尼酱

If I understand it correctly, it means:

欧尼 only means "哥" in Japanese, not "哥哥". The pronunciation of "哥哥" is "欧尼酱" in Japanese.

However, my dictionary shows both 哥 and 哥哥 means "elderly brother".

So what is the difference, if any, between 哥 and 哥哥?

discussed before at this site, 哥哥 is the regular word for elder brother, when addressed by brother or sister 哥 by itself is used, also name (surname or first according to the case) followed by 哥 can be used as address among social groups, which can be shortened to just 哥, besides 大哥 is used as more respectful, (often among criminal groups to address the leader) – user6065 Oct 13 '17 at 11:25
